Need help on AMI Tornados
Hi,
We are a new decal-making company from Moscow, Russia. After our debut set for French jets we're working on decal for AMI Tornados. The decal will be sized for the new 1/48 Revell kit. And we desperately need help and hope that the Italian modellers forum is right place to ask for it
We plan to make this MM7080 amongst others. Most of work is already done. But we still can't accurately draw its serial number and "TORNADO" name which are placed under the rudder. According to available photos, their font differs from the font used on common all-gray planes. But we can't make out exact details.
Can someone provide us with a photo with good planar view of the serial number please?
Another question. Being modellers, we try to point to characteristic details of planes in our instructions, that may be of interest for the real rivet-counters.
We noticed that the black bulge (marked with red arrow) is presented not on all planes. We suppose it is a some kind of a sensor which was installed during mid-life upgrade. Are we right? Is it possible to name it (if it is not a secret of course)?
Actually we have a lot more questions about AMI Tornados, but we will ask them later.
Thanks in advance and best wishes,
Yury

Here is MM7071 coded as 6-35 in April 2001:
It had a conical antennae on the spin and a narrow blade-shaped antennae under the nose.
And this is how it looked in October 2005 (renumbered as 6-12):
We can notice the following distinctions:
- a small "tablet" instead of the conical antennae on the spin (GPS?);
- the narrow antennae was removed;
- a bulge (as on MM7080 above) and a wide antennae were added.
Could you please specify all these bulges and antennas too?
Best wishes,
Yury

Re: Need help on AMI Tornados
early antennas were common to the Raf GR1 specs, now alla italian tornados are updated to the MLU (mid lide update) standard, that includes an updated avionic and RWR sensors, something close to the GR4 RAF standard, but little bit more advanced.
also implementation with modern weapon systems were done so, internal consolles are different from the pre-2010 standard.
On IDS models the MLU changes are, on the nose, the single antenna were modified in 2 small antennas in in front of the windshield on the second movable section of the radome. the early RWR (the same as F104S ASA) upper and lower cone antennas were replaced by GPS reciver on top and nothing below, all RWR system has been replaced with a new generation one that has it's antennas embedded in the frame.
i have lot of details on RSV tornado, either IDS and ECR standards.
email me

Luca

At the base of the canopy, there were the names of the crew.
Pilot: TC FRIGERIO
WSO: TC GIUSTI
The mission markers are of the entire 102° Gruppo, non of the only airplane MM. 7071.
The Ten. Col. (lieutenant colonel) Frigerio was the commander of the 102 Gruppo "Paperi incazzati" ("angry ducks) during the Kosovo war.
The Donald Duck insigna was only on left side.
Regards.

Thank you very much for the proposal to email you. I'll definately do it as soon as I collect and systematize all my questions.Icari Progene ha scritto:i have lot of details on RSV tornado, either IDS and ECR standards.

Although I've read about it on another forum, I failed to find any photo. Without it we can say nothing about size of written names, used font etc. Also I've read an opinion that the names were before Kosovo. Then they were overpainted during Kosovo deployment and were never wrote again.Giovanni Merello ha scritto: For the first draw. (6-35, MM. 7071).

Anyway we have photos dated by april 2001 which show 34 mission marks and the crew names hidden by fresh paint. So we decided to make this confirmed variant.
I'm affraid this is not correct. There is a photo of MM7071 from june 2002:The Donald Duck insigna was only on left side.
Best regards,
Yury

Re: Need help on AMI Tornados
I'd like to ask one more question
It is known that Tornados which acted from Mazar-E-Sharif in 2009 were decorated with ISAF logos on their air intakes. Can somebody specify if these logos were applied during the Afghan deployment or only upon returning to Italy?
Thanks and best wishes,
Yury

Thanks a lot, Valerio!
And I still have many unanswered questions about all those sensors and antennas
