Initially designed to resemble an everyday transport aircraft, the Heinkel He 111’s true purpose was to act as a fast medium bomber for the Luftwaffe. Distinguishing features of the “P” variant included a Daimler-Benz DB-601A-1 water-cooled engine and a redesigned nose section that was equipped to carry an MG 15 machine gun. Over 6,500 He 111s were built in all, making it the most-produced German bomber aircraft of World War II.
